Have Your Paints Dried Up? A Rescue Guide (And When It’s Hopeless)
In paint-by-numbers kits, the small acrylic jars are often the weakest link. Forget to tightly close the lid once or twice, or fail to wipe the rim clean—and the paint quickly turns into a thick, sticky mass.
If your acrylic starts to resemble chewing gum or modeling clay, here are specific “rescue” measures from Varvikas.

1. If the paint is thick but still tacky (The Drop Method)
This is first aid if the acrylic hasn’t turned to stone yet:
A) Add 1–2 drops of clean water (preferably boiled or distilled).
B) Forget the brush! Only stir with a toothpick or matchstick.
C) Mix thoroughly for two minutes. If you add too much water, the paint becomes transparent and won’t cover the numbers on the canvas.
2. If you want the paint "like new" (Acrylic Thinner)
Water eventually ruins acrylic structure. For perfect consistency without loss of color, buy acrylic paint thinner at any art store. A couple of drops in the jar—and the paint will flow again, ideally covering every area.

3. The “Wet Bath” method (for severe cases)
If your entire set has thickened at once:
A) Take an airtight container and put a damp sponge at the bottom.
B) Place the open jars inside (make sure water doesn’t get in!).
C) Close the container overnight. By morning, the paint will noticeably soften.
When is paint beyond saving?
To be honest, if your acrylic has turned into hard rubber or solid modeling clay that can’t be spread, there’s no bringing it back. Polymerization is complete and it will never return to its liquid state.
Why does this rarely happen to Varvikas customers?
We know how disappointing it is to abandon a painting due to dry paints. That’s why all Varvikas paints come in vacuum packaging. Until you break the seal, your paint stays factory-fresh.
Important: If you open a Varvikas set and immediately find dried paints, just contact us. We’re always ready to quickly resolve the issue, so you can finish your masterpiece with peace of mind.
How to prevent your paints from drying out?
Before closing any jar, always wipe the threads and edges with a damp tissue. If any crumbs are left on the rim, the lid won’t seal tightly and the paint may dry overnight. Always close firmly until you hear a snap!
