How to Cover Numbers in Paint by Numbers: 5 Simple Fixes

When printed numbers are still visible through yellow, pink, orange, or another light shade, the problem is usually coverage—not necessarily a defect in the paint. Acrylic colors vary in opacity, and a thin or over-diluted layer can let the printed guide show through.

Why Do Numbers Show Through in Paint by Numbers?

Coverage depends on the pigment, the thickness of the paint layer, and how much water is on the brush. Some acrylic colors are naturally more transparent than others. Adding too much water also makes the paint film thinner, which can make the printed number easier to see.

How to Cover Numbers in Paint by Numbers

1) Remove Excess Water from the Brush

Rinse your brush when needed, then blot it on a tissue or cloth before loading it with paint. A slightly damp brush is fine, but a dripping-wet brush can thin the acrylic and reduce coverage.

2) Let the First Coat Dry Before Judging the Result

Avoid repeatedly brushing over a layer while it is still wet. Let the first coat dry fully, then check whether the number is still visible. Drying time varies with layer thickness, temperature, and humidity.

3) Add a Second Coat Where Needed

Once the first layer is dry, apply another coat only over the area where the number still shows. A second layer often improves coverage, especially with lighter or more transparent colors.

4) Use Gentle Stippling for Small Areas

Instead of repeatedly brushing back and forth, try applying paint with short, gentle dabs. This can place more paint over the printed number without disturbing the layer underneath.

5) Cover a Stubborn Number with Opaque White Acrylic

If a printed number is still visible after the paint has dried, place a very small amount of opaque white acrylic paint or acrylic gesso directly over the numeral. Let it dry completely, then repaint the area with the intended color. Avoid correction fluid or other household products that are not made for acrylic painting surfaces.

• Do not add a large amount of water just to make the paint flow more easily.
• Do not keep scrubbing a layer that is still wet or tacky.
• Do not scrape or sand the printed number off the canvas.
• Do not use correction fluid as a substitute for artist acrylic or acrylic gesso.
